What is Psychology

Psychology is the science that connects what’s going on in our minds with how we feel and behave. Psychologists work to understand the reasons behind what we do and help to build new ways of thinking so we can live a more confident and satisfying life.

A clinical or registered psychologist might support their patients by helping them to manage challenges such as:

  • Anxiety or stress
  • Depression or grief
  • Unhealthy behaviours
  • Significant changes in life
  • Self-image and identity concerns
  • Relationship issues

A psychologist may choose to focus on a particular mental health concern or a particular age group or demographic such as children, adolescents, couples or older adults. A good psychologist can help you to develop the tools and strategies to manage and deal with life events and mental health conditions in the long-term – even after you’ve finished treatment.

Some of the key benefits of seeing a psychologist include:

  • Unbiased support
  • A fresh perspective on things that might be bothering you
  • Support with unhealthy coping behaviours
  • Strategies to cope in your everyday life
  • Burnout prevention
  • Help with accessing other services if needed
  • Evidence-based, proven treatments

A psychologist differs to a psychiatrist in that they are not a medical doctor and cannot prescribe medication or admit a person to hospital. However, they are qualified, allied health professionals trained in a wide range of evidence-based therapies.

A psychologist will work with you to develop a care plan that best suits your needs and goals for managing your mental health.
